There is no universal solar grant in the UK, but there is real support available. Here’s what exists and who qualifies.
Solar installations currently benefit from zero-rated VAT in the UK, which reduces the cost of a system compared with previous years. This applies automatically through your installer.
Under the SEG, licensed energy suppliers pay you for surplus electricity you export to the grid. Rates differ significantly between suppliers, so it is worth comparing tariffs once your system is installed. You will normally need an MCS-certified installation to qualify.
The ECO4 scheme provides energy-efficiency measures — which can, in some cases, include solar — for eligible households, typically those on qualifying benefits or living in less energy-efficient homes. Criteria are strict and change over time, so always check the current rules.
Be cautious of adverts promising free panels or guaranteed grants for everyone. Support is real but targeted. A reputable installer will tell you honestly whether you qualify — compare several before committing.
